Is Seaside in the Driver's Seat?
Maybe; but the "Driver's Seat" is still a pretty shaky place in September. Many different things can happen to derail Seaside's shot at a play-in game. Seaside will have a very good shot at a play-in game if they run the table. That is no sure thing. MVC and North County will be ready to take a shot at the upset and Pacific Division title if they can get a win vs the Spartans. Stranger things have certainly happened.
Any number of things can happen in the playoffs. They could play Palma again, they could run into a game St. Ignatius or Sacred Heart Prep team or they could just play a bad game.
Seaside would like to see things turn around in a hurry for the Chieftains. The more successful Palma is this season, the better that win will look for Seaside.
It would be a bit of a let-down for the Spartans if Palma goes into Monterey on Friday and gets pounded. I have a feeling that Coach Carnazzo will pick his kids up for this game and won't let Palma lose 3 straight.
I've got news for everyone who thinks the athletes are just over at Seaside High; Monterey has some serious speed and power too. QB Jimmy Hill is a play maker and has good command of that offense. They return their entire backfield which was pretty good last year plus Dante Murphy who would've been the fasted kid on Seaside if he had stayed. They also have some decent size in the trenches. They've got some depth issues, and they've played a cupcake pre-league schedule. I'm very intrigued by this match-up.
While Seaside will never celebrate success by Monterey; if they (Monterey) do beat Palma and win the Gabilan Division, this would set up an epic "Battle of the Bay". Even though it wouldn't be for a league title it would be very important for both teams' post season chances. If this scenario happened and Seaside was able to win the "Battle" and CCS D4 it would be just as advantageous for the Spartans play-in chances than if Palma was able to win the Gabilan.
Friday Night at Seaside was a very exciting time for the Spartans and their fans as they knocked off Palma. I think the coaching staff is doing a good job of keeping this win in perspective and understanding that if things keep clicking they will still be playing well into December.
Taking care of business vs the Condors at home on Friday night will be good momentum for them to keep. Plus the fact that North County has beaten Seaside the last 2 years in a row. This is a good rivalry for both teams and Seaside has been eying this game for a while. We'll just say that it has been circled on both teams' calendars.
